3D Printing in Space- a Towering Success, Quite Literally!
Hudgins: O’Keefe is what NASA needs right now, someone who understands budgets and organizations. In the ancient rite of the Roman Catholic Church, with bull Supremi omnipotentis Dei of 11 March 1572, Pope Pius V granted the indulgence of 50 days for those who recite the penitential psalms. The Vespers of the older form of the office comprise Psalms 114 (116), 119 (120), 120 (121), 129 (130), and 137 (138), with the Magnificat and the preces. The lessons, the responses, and other formulae were borrowed from various sources; certain churches included in this office the Second Vespers and Compline; in other places, instead of the lessons of the Roman Ritual, they read Augustine, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiasticus, Osee, Isaiah, Daniel, etc. The responses varied likewise; many examples may be found in Martène and the writers cited below in the bibliography. The lessons from Job, so suitable for the Office of the Dead, were also read in very early days at funeral services. The use of some of these psalms in the funeral service is of high antiquity, as appears from passages by Augustine and other writers of the fourth and fifth centuries. The Mozarabic Rite possesses a very rich funeral ritual.
This office, as it exists in the Roman Rite up to and including the current 1960 Roman Breviary, is composed of First Vespers (known as The Placébo from the first word of its opening antiphon) Matins and Lauds (traditional known together as The Dírige from the opening antiphon of the first nocturn of Matins), and the Mass (known as The Requiem from the first word of its proper opening chant, or Introit). The Office of the Dead was composed originally to satisfy private devotion to the dead, and at first had no official character. Word for Mac was released in 1985. Word for Mac was the first graphical version of Microsoft Word. The word dirge is a derivative from Dírige, the name of the Matins Laudes section of the cycle. A well-known refrain from the cycle is Timor mortis conturbat me, “The fear of death disturbs me” or, more colloquially, “I am scared to death of dying”. The responses, too, deserve notice, especially the response “Libera me, Domine, de viis inferni qui portas æreas confregisti et visitasti inferum et dedisti eis lumen . . . qui erant in poenis . . . advenisti redemptor noster” etc. This is one of the few texts in the Roman Liturgy alluding to Christ’s descent into hell.
Many women led local volunteer War Price and Rationing Boards that ensured adherence to stabilization policies through check-ins with stores to report businesses breaking the rules. Local community organizations, governments, and OPA boards held educational seminars aimed at women, targeted women to join local price and rationing boards, and recruited women for volunteer programs. By the end of July, Congress had reversed course and passed legislation reinstating the OPA and price controls, though this bill was no stronger than what President Truman had vetoed earlier. President Harry S. Truman vetoed this bill in hopes of forcing Congress to create a stronger one, but as the month of June came to an end, the OPA shut down, and its price and rent controls went with it. Both divisions merged to become the Office of Price Administration and Civilian Supply (OPACS) within the Office for Emergency Management by Executive Order 8734, on April 11, 1941. Civil supply functions were transferred to the Office of Production Management. Most functions of the OPA were transferred to the newly established Office of Temporary Controls (OTC) by Executive Order 9809, December 12, 1946. The Financial Reporting Division was transferred to the Federal Trade Commission. The OPA was abolished effective May 29, 1947 by the General Liquidation Order, issued March 14, 1947, by the OPA Administrator.
The psalms are chosen not in their serial order, as in the Sunday Office or the Roman ferial Office, but because certain verses, which serve as antiphons, seem to allude to the state of the dead. It is fortunate that the Roman Rite preserved carefully and without notable change this office, which, like that of Holy Week, has retained in its archaic forms the memory and the atmosphere of a very ancient liturgy. By June 1946, significant opposition by NAM and NRDA had been mounted to sway Congress, which, only two days before the existing legislation was set to expire, passed a bill that would have left the OPA a much-weakened version of its past self. The OPA unsuccessfully tried to revoke the car dealer license of unorthodox businessman Madman Muntz for violating used car regulations, subject to price control. During the Korean War, similar functions were performed by the Office of Price Stabilization (OPS). Groups such as the National Association of Manufacturers and the National Retail Dry Good Association sought to guarantee companies a minimum amount of profits, thereby effectively limiting the price control measures. We’ve since had a very good look at Mars’s surface and the “face” turns out to be an illusion created by hills and shadows.
