NASA Delays Atlantis Shuttle Launch
In the half-century since people visited the Moon, NASA has continued to push the boundaries of knowledge to deliver on the promise of American ingenuity and leadership in space. The first test flight of the SLS is slated for 2019, and NASA hopes the rocket and its Orion capsule are flying astronauts by 2021, though changes may continue to push that date back. 2007 Aug 13 news: Team ready to depart for Perseid test flight. Photos of the Perseids test flight by Eric James (NASA Ames). Photos of the Perseids test flight by Jane Houston-Jones. Aviation combined all the elements I loved.” It seems like a perfect description of this flight. Science of course, freedom to fly way above other traffic, a beautiful view of San Francisco from FL 470, a magic sunrise and of most of all beautiful meteors.” – Julian Nott. The proposed flight plan would take the aircraft to Utah, then turn around and on parallel trajectories follow the Earth’s shadow.
Photographic observations: use a digital camera with a low f-number lens (diafragm at f2.8 or less), set at ISO 1600, and take series of 10 second exposures of about 50 degree field of sky (not too big). The second active site is at Nasa Langley in Hampton, Virginia, established December 2014. The legacy CERES Ocean Validation Experiment (COVE) at Chesapeake Light Station site was active from 2000-2016 and after 17 years of continuous operation has been indefinitely suspended due to structural concerns. Before the observations, make sure to set the time on your camera/camcorder to 1 second accurately. Set camera such that as many as possible stars are visible. In the 1990s, Eileen Collins broke through the “glass ceiling to the stars” as NASA’s first female astronaut to pilot and command the space shuttle. Video observations: use camcorder to film small portion of the sky containing many bright stars such as Orion (make sure stars are visible). The Aurigid Meteor Observation Project explains how to use a laptop to do the counting for you. The Aurigid MAC mission is dedicated to observing the Aurigid shower from altitude, where the Moon is mostly out of the picture, and where the low extinction near the horizon creates a large surface area for counting meteors and for measuring spectra for meteoroid composition.
We now know we have the tools to achieve the main mission objectives and look foreward to the Aurigid mission on September 1. “In ‘Spirit of Saint Louis’ Lindbergh wrote “Science, freedom, beauty, adventure. The mission will include ground-based observations by national and international teams (green dots on map above). It is, in a very real way, simply the latest exploratory mission away from Mother Earth. In fact, the first reported case in North America was in Arizona sometime around 1956, which means this heavy creature has been on the radar of cryptozoologists (scientists who study animals that may or may not be real) in North and South America for nearly 70 years. Potato chips, America’s beloved snack of choice, were originally developed to annoy a dissatisfied diner in 1853. George Crum, a chef at the Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York, served French fries to the customer, who initially complained they were too thick. One active site is Granite Island in Lake Superior, established in the summer of 2018, located 19 km (12 mi.) due North of Marquette, Michigan, and 10 km (6 mi.) to the closest land point.

But when things get busy at the CDSCC – as was the case last month, when they were tracking 43 missions simultaneously – they call on the Parkes Observatory, 250km up the road, for help. The last mission, Gemini 12, solved problems from earlier spacewalks. Two privately owned Gulfstream GV aircraft are made available for this mission, providing a total of 21 windows to the shower for 24 participating researchers and volunteers. The Perseids were glorious, sometimes two at the same time. Fourteen of us departed at 01:00 PDT in the care of pilot Steve Elam, climbed to 45,000 ft, and learned that our intensified cameras detect the same faint meteors as in research aircraft.
