In an effort to lighten the load of spacecraft at launch, NASA engineers have designed a new rocket engine that eliminates the need for onboard oxidizer. Instead of using onboard oxygen to combust the hydrogen fuel, the scramjet scoops up oxygen as it travels through the atmosphere. If scientists can make the so-called “negative mass” required for an Alcubierre drive, even a tiny example could be deployed within Earth’s atmosphere. Aircraft will incorporate adaptive control algorithms that will provide enhanced safety and robustness in the presence of failures and adverse flight conditions. In this paper we detail our effort to formalize and prove requirements for the Quad-redundant Flight Control System (QFCS) within NASA’s Transport Class Model (TCM). This approach is designed to exploit the verification effort and artifacts that are already part of typical software verification processes in the avionics domain. The material presented is not intended to represent a complete certification effort. The purpose here is to illustrate a reasonable application of each of these techniques for satisfying certification objectives. Each of these techniques has strengths and weaknesses, and each could be applied to different life cycle data items and different objectives than those described here.

This NASA-funded project investigated what sorts of assurances are necessary and appropriate to justify the application of formal methods tools throughout all phases of design in real safety-critical settings. Formal methods tools are expected to play a larger role in implementing and certifying safety-critical systems over the next decade.
