In the 1970s CFC-113 was marketed as “the solvent of the future”, under the name Arklone by Imperial Chemical Industries. Certain textile dyes are “loose” and will shed dye during solvent immersion. It will contain residual solvent, powdered filter material (diatomite), carbon, non-volatile residues, lint, dyes, grease, soils, and water. Mix a couple drops of Dawn (or another, inferior dish soap) and a couple cups of warm water together, dip your lint-free cloth in the soapy mixture, wring out, and wipe down the surfaces. Mix together baking soda and water to form a paste. If you make a homemade cleaning solution, use distilled water, especially if you have hard water containing more minerals. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was once widely used in dry cleaning as the first chlorinated solvent, but its use was abandoned after its high hepatotoxicity was discovered. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane was also used in dry cleaning, until its use was banned due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer. Galvanized iron is actually steel covered in a protective layer of zinc, but it was soon discovered that this zinc layer naturally corroded due to exposure to the atmosphere and rainwater, as well as cement, runoff, etc. Once corrosion occurred down to the base metal, porous plaques and rust would form, leading to sediment build-up that would gradually clog these drains.

The symbiosis relationship between client and host does not break down because the abundance of these parasites varies significantly seasonally and spatially, and the overall benefit to the larger fish outweighs any cheating on by the smaller cleaner. Hydro-mechanical drain cleans use high-pressure water to break up obstructions and flush these smaller particles down the drain. Perchloroethylene (PCE or “perc”, tetrachloroethylene) has been in use since the 1930s. PCE is the most common solvent, the “standard” for cleaning performance. Because PCE has been the longtime de facto standard solvent for dry cleaning, there is considerable interest in finding a “drop-in” substitute solvent which could be used with minimal changes to existing equipment and procedures. Glycol ethers (also called “propylene glycol ethers”) are a class of organic solvents which were introduced in the 1990s as an alternative to PCE. When an atom does not contain equal numbers of protons and electrons, it is called an ion. A sewer jetter is composed of a controlled high-pressure water source such as a pressure washer or reciprocating displacement pump, a flexible high-pressure line (called a jetter hose which connects the high-pressure engine to the mini-reel) of up to hundreds of metres (several hundred feet) in length, the Mini-Reel (a hose reel which can be taken a distance from the engine) and a nozzle that uses hydraulic force to pull the line into sewer drains, clean the sides of pipes, and flush out residue.

Electric drain cleaners, also called plumber’s snakes, use the mechanical force of an electric motor to twist a flexible cable or spring in a clockwise direction and drive it into a pipe. This term typically applies to chemical, enzymatic, or mechanical tools such as commercial chemical cleaners, plumber’s snakes, drain augers, bio-enzyme solutions, or toilet plungers. Advantages of handheld drain augers include low relative cost and ready availability of these tools in hardware stores. Many handheld augers have cables which are thin enough to pass through common sink traps, but manufacturers do not recommend using handheld drain augers in toilets because of their potential to scratch ceramic surfaces. “I ride my bike to work for years, but is that enough? Advantages of air burst drain cleaners include the potential to immediately clear clogs and slow-running drains, in contrast to chemical cleaners that can take more time to work. Safety considerations for electric drain cleaners include the requirement to wear work gloves and eye protection, to carefully control the cable during operation to avoid overstressing it, to use appropriate caution when working around rotating machinery, and to use properly grounded electrical outlets.

To keep outdoor glass furniture clean, you should cover your glass table when it’s not in use. Run the cover first through a delicate cycle with cold water and a cup of vinegar. On some models of hydro-mechanical drain cleaner both hot and cold water can be used, providing added cleaning power for fat, protein, or other easily melting drain clogs. Similar to handheld augers, drain rods can be used for clearing blockages in long, straight runs of pipe. This is more effective than using a snake, blades, or even drain rods because, first the water is shot at such a high intensity that the force isn’t even comparable to manual labour, secondly the water is much more capable of bending around curved or angular pipes to reach all the tight spots. Accelerated gas creates a force on standing water that can dislodge clogs that accumulate close to drain openings. This allows faster cleaning, but can damage some synthetic beads and sequins if not used correctly. Otherwise, they’ll make their way into your gutters and clog them, start to rot and produce a foul smell, and may damage your lawn.
