Other office archetypes include the saboteur who constantly steps over others to get where they’re going, the malingerer who is always sick just when you need them, and the doormat who would be delighted to give up their Saturday so you can complete that report on time. There are many archetypes in modern society, and none are more familiar than those we find at our work. Plus, with minimal space to work with, you may even be able to avoid clutter from building up in your workspace. Do you ever refuse to take on more work? No charges were filed against the two children. Bad day for a harried police officer? Well, yeah. Maybe. Bad day for schools and the juvenile justice system? A juvenile – in 45 states, plus D.C. 17. In Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, Texas and Wisconsin, it’s anyone younger than age 16. A juvenile offender normally doesn’t move through the criminal courts, but through the juvenile justice system, which is guided, according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, “by the concept of rehabilitation through individualized justice.” For more serious offenses, though, juveniles may be tried in criminal court where, if found guilty, the court focuses on punishment, not rehab. Until then, though, school police officers may have to lean on something much less complicated than legislative action when faced with a pre-pubescent troublemaker. Still, as the recent news out of Orlando shows, police and schoolkids – even elementary school kids – just sometimes don’t mix. Bill Clinton and George W. Bush even asked for extensions to cover their college-age children for a period after they left office, as did Barack Obama for his daughters.
From well-known Black scientists, such as George Washington Carver, to James West, who coinvented the microphone, to those whose impressive scientific records have nearly languished in obscurity, our list will have you rethinking what else might be left out of your history textbook. On the state level, attorneys general might challenge the constitutionality of a law. You might be one of these figures at work, but very different outside of it. That’s why it’s important to figure out the role you’re falling into at work, so that you can decide if it is authentic to who you are and who you want to be. After all, however often we change jobs in our lives, we spend most of our waking hours at work, so it’s no surprise that we start to recognize constants that appear in one given workplace and then follow us to another. If it is, embrace it, and if not, change it! An archetype is the perfect example of a thing; that is, it is unlike a stereotype, which is usually based on either outright falsehoods or a kernel of truth that has been extrapolated far beyond what it originally included.
