Who’s Your Clean Buyer?

Can you use Dawn dish soap to clean upholstery? In five years, the Chevrolet Chevy II Nova SS had grown from a mild-mannered utility vehicle to one of the hottest street performers, capable of traveling to 60 in 7.2 seconds — provided that the assertive 327 was installed.

Super Sports would continue as the Nova line gained a massive revamping for 1968; but the SS mystique edged over to the bigger Chevrolets for its final years. Amazingly, the sport coupe and convertible (and Super Sport options) were dropped. Offered on the top-rung Malibu Sport Coupe (hardtop) and convertible, the $162 SS package was similar to Impala’s, including a black or white vinyl interior, front bucket seats, quartet of gauges, console, and radial-pattern wheel covers. In reality, not much had changed apart from a cleaner fastback-styled silhouette and full-width grille, and a fresh selection of vinyl and cloth/vinyl interiors. A mild face-lift produced a cleaner front end with bumper-mounted signal lamps. During the year, textured vinyl front bucket seats replaced the earlier corduroy pattern. A 327-cid V-8 was approved during Chevelle’s first model year, ready to deliver 250 or 300 bhp. Ah, but either of those sixes left a promising expanse of space under the hood, space that could easily accommodate a V-8-which it did: Chevrolet’s long-familiar 283-cid V-8, to be exact, with a moderate 195 horses at the ready.

Chevrolet head Pete Estes favored the idea, so the 396 soon became an official choice. Name proposed prior to discovery/creation of element or prior to official renaming of a placeholder name. Some items included with prior SS packages were optional, such as bucket seats. Commonly available cleaners are limited to tiles, windows and other glass-based items. The SS 396 had stronger springs, recalibrated shocks, and thicker front stabilizer bar. The 396 V-8 put out 325 bhp in standard trim, or 360 with a hotter camshaft. Two tougher versions of the 327 emerged: one cranking out 275 bhp, the other tweaked to 350. A close-ratio four-speed gearbox was available with that top powerplant, but not Powerglide automatic.
