The SSS will accept late registration, as long as the man is still under 26. If a man fails to register before his 26th birthday, he may be permanently excluded from some federal benefits. When the Selective Service System was created, women were excluded from combat roles, thus making them ineligible for registration. We’ll also see what the Selective Service System does in times of peace to prepare for a draft in the future. 18 and 25. Under current law, women cannot be drafted (see our sidebar for more details on this). In the next section, we’ll see what would actually happen if the draft were reinstated.

In other words, the agency is in charge of overseeing the draft (conscription) whenever it is reinstated. The SSS keeps the names and addresses of all registered men on file so they can be called up easily if the draft is reinstated. Registering with the SSS does not necessarily mean you will be drafted when a war breaks out; it is merely a system for keeping your name and address on file. Its secondary purpose is to maintain an alternative draft-time service program for conscientious objectors, citizens who are eligible for the draft but will not engage in combat because of their moral beliefs. Men can register via mail, over the internet, at the post office or with a high school Selective Service Registrar (click here for details on registration). But as an insurance policy, the government also maintains the Selective Service System (SSS). Instead, it encourages registration by withholding government benefits from potential draftees in violation.

The potential draftee pool is made up of male U.S. The government can prosecute a potential draftee who does not register with the SSS. Additionally, all eligible men must register before gaining U.S. All other men between 18 and 25 are legally required to register with the SSS within 30 days of reaching eligibility. To this day, the government of the People’s Republic of China, whose capital is Beijing, considers Taiwan part of its “sacred territory.” The constitution of the People’s Republic of China states that “(i)t is the lofty duty of the entire Chinese people, including our compatriots in Taiwan, to accomplish the great task of reunifying the motherland.” Its foreign affairs ministry says, “Taiwan is a sacred and inseparable part of China’s territory.” On Oct. 2, 2023, the Beijing government celebrated its national day by releasing a video signifying its focus on unity with the people of Taiwan. Which then brings up the question, exactly how do we know whether we are, in fact, satisfied with our work or whether we’re just having a bad day at it? Day 4 will not include an EVA, but Day 5 will.
